A watershed is defined as an area of land that drains to a given location. Rice Creek for example, drains all of the land shown in this map. The creek then flows into the Mississippi River at Fridley. Water in the areas outside of this map, drain to other streams and thus is in a different watershed. When thinking about watersheds, it is important to remember that they occur at many different scales. The Rice Creek watershed is itself part of the Mississippi River Watershed, and within the Rice Creek watershed, there are an infinite number of smaller watersheds.
